Top 100 baby names number 76

I thought it would be fun to look at the top 100 boys and girls names from last year.  I am doing a series on these with their meanings. Enjoy!

Today we have the number 76s -  Summer and Stanley.

Summer (English)

 Lovely summer flowers.

Lovely summer flowers.

After Robyn turned out to have a less direct origin than I expected I turned to Summer. Summer has exactly the origin and history you think it does. It began being used as a name in the 1970s by the back-to-nature types and has made its way into the mainstream with time. I think it's a very pretty name and I'm glad it's no longer a sign that your dad home-brews nettle beer and your mum has five half-completed macrame projects.

 A stony meadow, or stone-leigh.

Stanley (English)

This name is a contraction of Stone-Leigh which dates from some time in 1000-1200 BCE. Stone is simple enough, and Leigh in Old English means a meadow or clearing. So Stanley means the stony clearing or refers to the person who lives near a stony clearing.
