Top 100 baby names number 68
I thought it would be fun to look at the top 100 boys and girls names from last year. I am doing a series on these with their meanings. Enjoy!
Today we have numbers 68 - Gracie and Caleb.
Gracie is from Grace, one of the 'virtue names' popular amongst 17th century Puritans. It is associated with the concept of 'divine grace', which is present across many religions and can therefore be seen as an inherent human quality rather than a result of following any given religious tenets.
The original name Caleb in Hebrew is written in characters that make the meaning somewhat tricky to determine. It can be read as 'dog' which could sound insulting to modern readers but several Biblical figures had animal names that we would now read as insulting, and obviously weren't at the time. If Caleb means 'dog' it is likely to be an allusion to faithfulness or loyalty.
Another possible reading of the characters in Caleb is 'wholehearted' which could mean devoted or brave.
