I thought it would be fun to look at the top 100 boys and girls names from last year.  I am doing a series on these with their meanings. Enjoy!

Today we have numbers 50 - Molly and Carter.

 Molly (English)

Molly can’t really be defined because it’s a pet name for Margaret, Mary, Martha, and probably other ‘M’ names as well. However it we do know something of the origin which is that it comes from two medieval diminutives Malle and Molle. Incidentally, the medieval rhyming nickname trend was also at work here so Molly also became Polly.

 Carter (English)

A horse and cart on a sunny day.
