 Eliza (Hebrew)

Eliza Schuyler Hamilton: wife and aide to American founding father, and inspiration for the hit musical, Alexander Hamilton.

Eliza is short for Elizabeth and I’ve already covered the meaning of Elizabeth here. What’s interesting to me is that Eliza is becoming more popular recently, after Liz or Lizzie was the more common nickname for so many years.

 Jake (Hebrew)

Jacob means to follow hot on the heels.

Jacob means to follow hot on the heels.

This is a name which relates to the story of the birth of the Hebrew patriarch, Jacob, son of Isaac and Rebecca. Jacob was born holding the heel of his older twin, Esau, whose birthright he later bought. The Hebrew elements of the name include the one for ‘to follow’ or ‘to supplant or overtake’, but also the word for ‘heel’.
