Top 100 baby names number 46

I thought it would be fun to look at the top 100 boys and girls names from last year.  I am doing a series on these with their meanings. Enjoy!

Today we have numbers 46 - Thea and Rory.

 Thea (Greek)

Statue of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom.

Statue of Athena, Greek goddess of wisdom.

Thea is a nickname for Dorothea or Theodora both of which mean ‘gift from God’ (they are the same elements in reverse order). The ‘Thea’ part in these names means ‘god’ or ‘divine’. So you could say that Thea by itself means ‘goddess’.

 Rory (Gaelic)

 A crown for a king.

A crown for a king.

This is an anglicisation of the Gaelic name Ruaidhrí/Ruairidh (same pronunciation). This was the name of the last High King of Ireland. It means ‘red(headed) king’.
