Top 100 baby names number 85

I thought it would be fun to look at the top 100 boys and girls names from last year.  I will be doing a series on these with their meanings. Enjoy!

Today we have the number 85s - Victoria and Kai - one simple, one very complex.

Victoria is strongly associated with royalty.

Victoria (Latin)

A nice easy one this, Victoria is the Latin for victory or conquer. Most associated with the UK’s famous nineteenth century imperial Queen and our early twenty-first century Queen WAG.

One of the many meanings of Kai is pier.

Kai (many origins)

If Victoria was easy, Kai is a lot trickier. It has many different possible meanings from cultures around the world. Many of the European ones seem to originate from the Latin name 'Caius' and mean happy, joy or rejoice. In Basque and Estonian it means pier. In Chinese it has several meanings including victory, start and open. In Frisian it’s short for a name that means warrior. In Japanese it could mean ocean, shell, restoration, or recovery. In Swahili it means lovable. I’ve probably missed some. Please feel free to add to the list.
