Top 100 baby names number 81
I thought it would be fun to look at the top 100 boys and girls names from last year. I will be doing a series on these with their meanings. Enjoy!
Today we have the number 81 - Maria and Ryan.
Maria (and the anglicised version, Mary) are Latin and come from the New Testament Greek name Mariam which itself came from the Hebrew, Miriam. We don’t really know the origin of the name. Theories include ‘sea of bitterness’, ‘rebelliousness’ and ‘wished for a child’. However, there’s a strong possibility it came from an Egyptian name (in the Old Testament Miriam is the sister of Moses) and may have derived from mry ‘beloved’ or mr ‘love’.
Ryan comes from an Irish surname. The original meaning is not clear, but the most popular ideas are that it meant ‘illustrious’ or ‘little king’.
